POSTPONED Washington DC – The Syrian Democratic Council will host a press briefing to discuss how the recent takeover of Aleppo and Hama in western Syria will impact North and East Syria. In this press event, representatives from Syria will discuss the outlook for the region of the fast-moving crisis that is unfolding.
North and East Syria is the region north and east of the Euphrates River, known for Kurdish fighters who battled shoulder-to-shoulder with the US Armed Forces to defeat ISIS. The Syrian Democratic Council is the political arm of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES).
President Trump declared in March 2019 that the US and the SDF had together defeated ISIS. SDF sacrificed 12,000 of its troops for the privilege of driving ISIS back into the shadows. The SDF continue to battle ISIS terror cells, and jail thousands of ISIS fighters, with necessary train-and-equip support from the US. The US military, diplomats, and special forces operate from the US bases in our region. US academics, journalists, and observers regularly travel there as well. North and East Syria shares strong democratic values with the United States – equality under the law, protection of human rights, women’s rights, pluralism, and religious freedom.
North and East Syria is known for its oil resources, textiles, olive trees, wheat production, and agriculture. It is called the “breadbasket of Syria” as it is a net food exporter. It is 19,000 square miles and has a population of roughly 5 million residents. The DAANES has governed the region since 2014, providing services such as water, electricity, sanitation, healthcare, education, and security. Its military is the SDF, containing the Kurdish-led Peoples Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), and is a partner force of the US military.
